Awareness Through Movement

Awareness Through Movement Lessons

Awareness Through Movement lessons are usually taught as a group class and most lessons involve lying on the floor. There are also many lessons taught in sitting or standing, and adaptions can usually be made if lying on the floor is not possible or a certain position is not comfortable.

Comfort is a priority in the Feldenkrais Method®, and if you learn nothing other than how to help yourself feel comfortable in lying, sitting or moving, then that is a huge achievement which will affect all aspects of your life.

These lessons are not "exercises". They are not about stretching or strengthening. The aim is to gain a deeper awareness about how you move (or lie/sit) and explore the possibilities of how you could move (or lie/sit) in a different way; using more of yourself and less muscular effort. This process is extremely grounding and has many similarities to mindfulness practice. The principles can become part of your everyday life, helping you to be more resilient and able to cope with life's many challenges.

You are guided with verbal instructions through a series of movements which inevitably lead to an initial movement or position becoming easier and more comfortable. The slower and smaller the movements the more you will feel and learn. The movements can also be done in your imagination with astonishing results.

As Moshe Feldenkrais said..."When you know what you do you can do what you want".
